혹시 아무도 없을 때에 혼자서 몰래 강남스타일 춤을 춰 보신 적이 있으신가요? 장담하건데 인정하기 싫어도 아마 한번쯤은 시도해 보셨을 것입니다. 유튜브 조희수 3억4천7백회를 넘는 강남스타일의 영향권을 피해가기란 불가능 해 보입니다. 오늘날 미국 문화에 영향을 미치는 한국적인 요소들 중에 갈비나 김치만 있는 것은 아닙니다. 미국에는 맛있는 한국음식들 뿐 아니라 멋진 한국 사람들(혹은 한국 혈통의 사람들)이 많이 있습니다!  재미삼아 미국에서 활동한 한국스타들의 히스토리를 한번 펼쳐봤습니다.

Yunjin Kim is a Korean American actress and made her breakthrough debut in Korea’s first Blockbuster film Shiri in 1999. Shiri was the highest earning film in Korean history at the time, which made Kim a star throughout South Korea. After laying under the radar for a couple years, Kim made her appearance in the U.S. television series Lost. She made a positive impression on the U.S. and remained on the television series from 2004-2010.

 

Sandra Oh is a canadian actress and is best known for her role as Dr. Cristina Yang on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. She has also been in well known movies such as Under the Tuscan Sun  and Sideways. She has won multiple Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. She has also earned five nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Rain, born Jung Ji Hoon in South Korea, is one of the most well known singers throughout Asia, with sold out concerts around the world. He has seven albums (six Korean, one Japanese) and 19 singles. Rain holds the same level of status that Michael Jackson held in the USA as a pop star and musician. Alongside being a pop star, Rain is also an actor and has starred on one of the highest rated Korean television dramas. He is categorized as a ‘world star’ due to being popular throughout Asia, Europe and North America.

 

Jun Ji-hyun, born in Seoul, South Korea, is an actress and Korean icon. She was the face of  Samsung mobile phone commercials as well as acted in one of the highest grossing Korean comedies of all time, My Sassy Girl (2001). In 2009, she starred in the live-action film adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire, which was filmed in English (translated from Japanese). The film was released to the USA and grossed $103,000. The majority of the film’s reviews were negative due to the lack of originality, jumbled plot and “gratuitous” violence.

 

Jang Dong-Gun is a top South Korean actor and is one of the highest paid actors and celebrity endorsers in Korea. He spent his childhood in Seoul and attended the Korean National University of Arts; although, he did not earn a degree due to dropping out. He starred in a U.S. film called The Warrior’s Way, where he made his Hollywood debut. Unfortunately the film encountered post-production issues and received poor reviews with an average rating of 4.6 out of 10.

 

Wonder Girls are a South Korean girl group that consists of five young females. The girl group had their debut in the American market in 2009 when they appeared as an opener for The Jonas Brothers’ World Tour. This American debut made the Wonder Girls the first South Korean group to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number seventy-six.

 

Park Jae-Sang, or better known as PSY, is a South Korean singer-songwriter, rapper, dancer, and record producer. His breakthrough into the spotlight came from his video “Gangnam Style”, which is one of the most viewed K-Pop videos on YouTube. The video was posted on July 15, 2012 and has approximately 347 million views as of October 1st, 2012. The video became viral within weeks of its release due to being tweeted by U.S. celebrities such as T-Pain, Britney Spears and Katy Perry. PSY is known for straying from the K-Pop mold by differing from traditional K-Pop performances.
